Spicy White Bean Soup

A few weeks ago a rare occasion happened in Oaxaca: my husband and I had the SAME afternoon free with absolutely NO obligations!! WOOHOO!! That happens about once in a million years. So we decided to have lunch at a casual place downtown where they happened to serve some really yummy soup. This recipe is my copycat version of their spicy white bean soup.

The restaurant was called El Paseo. Though it may look a little fancier inside, the music makes for a much more relaxed vibe. Restaurant by day, bar by night.

This soup is the perfect ingredient for a spicy afternoon. I LOVE  this soup on a rainy day and pairs well with crusty bread for dipping or even tortillas if you’re feeling festive!

I personally prefer this method to cook my own dried white beans but if you prefer using a canned version then go for it! It all turns out just as delicious.

To add the extra spice, I like to use a casera salsa which is basically a spicy red salsa. However, I like a little extra heat so I also added some habanero salsa to my bowl. If you’re not one for spice no problem! Just choose a milder salsa or leave it out completely.

Spicy White Bean Soup


  • 1 1/2 cups white beans cooked (about one can)
  • 1/2 white onion diced
  • 1/4 cup red onion thinly sliced
  • 1-2 roma tomatoes diced
  • 2-3 garlic cloves finely minced
  • handful cilantro
  • 2 tsp. spicy salsa
  • 4 cups water
  • tomato boullion cube
  • 1-2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • lime


  1. In a large pot saute white onion and tomato until soft and translucent.
  2. Add water, boullion cube, garlic, salsa and bring to a boil.
  3. Then add remaining ingredients, reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Adjust ingredients to taste.
  4. Top with more cilantro and fresh squeezed lime. Enjoy!
